Sports Car Photos | Drive the Mazda MX5 Car

The Mazda MX-5 is a fantastic little basic car with a front engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster without unnecessary frills to detract from the thrills you get from the sweet handling and decent chassis. Performance wise it has a lower-powered 124bhp 1.8- litre that might be just a touch too limp for such a capable chassis. The two-litre model sneaks to 62mph in just a smidgen under 8.0-seconds and on to a top speed of 131mph, which is exactly where the Mazda MX-5 feels most comfortable. It is not a fire-breather, but that is not really the point in this context – it is all about the way the little Mazda drives. Where the driving is concerned the new MX-5 - much like the old model - is extremely sensitive to wheel and tyre choice. The big rims and tyres look good but spoil the roadster's delicacy. They tend to catch ruts and cambers more, which means that the car is less progressive on the limit.

Surprising amounts of space are readily available in the new car, thanks to some very clever attention to detail on the part of the design team. There is buckets of storage cubby action available in the cabin, with a decent boot even when the hood is stowed. And the front seats cope with even the biggest of occupants without popping you up over the windscreen top and into the breeze.

You can tell the MX-5 has been built down to a price, but they have done the best that they can. Interior quality is a decent step up from the old model, with some nice new shapes and everything - the hood especially - just reeks of quality engineering. The plastics however are not so impressive. There is a depth of feeling about the whole car that inspires confidence in the way it has been put together. If in doubt, check under the bonnet for evidence.

Safety Six airbags are available as well as traction and stability control for the first time on an MX-5. To be brutal, the car just does not need it, but it will probably prevent someone having a wheel twirling moments on an icy roundabout. The two rollover hoops shadow the headrests of the front seats, so they are not visually intrusive but it is nice to know that they are there.

We should all own an MX-5 at least once in our lives, if only to demonstrate to ourselves why getting back to basics is a very good thing. It will also probably save your driving license from taking a battering because you get the thrills without the speed. It should also hold a decent residual value thanks to solid demand for MX-5s of absolutely any kind. No reason to believe this model will be any different.

It will put a smile on your face wider than the Grand Canyon, so it is hard to put an empirical value on the new MX-5. It is better than the older models in terms of quality and refinement, but has resisted the temptation to wander off down the silicon-tweak school of chassis management. The prices has been increased, but if you can afford to go for the newer model then do so. And do not forget to go for the smaller wheels.

In short the Mazda MX-5 is a great little car which is improved rather than re-designed over the old model. It makes tons of sense if you fancy a toy that will not break the bank, or make passers-by hate you on sight.

Is it possible to make a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster even more exclusive and individual? Brabus proves that the topless Mercedes supercar can be made even sportier and more exciting with its sophisticated customization program.

To give the two-seater even more striking looks while at the same time minimizing lift on the front axle, the Brabus designers have developed a front spoiler that attaches to the production bumper. The spoiler is made from exposed carbon fiber and its shape was fine-tuned in the wind tunnel. It is especially lightweight and extremely tough. A corresponding Brabus rear diffuser made from exposed carbon fiber can replace its production counterpart.

The sporty Brabus outfit for the SLR Roadster is dominated by Brabus Monoblock VI 20-inch wheels that fill the wheel houses perfectly. The fully polished multi-piece wheels feature six double spokes and are mounted on the sports car in size 9.5Jx20 in front and size 11.5Jx20 on the rear axle. High-performance tires in sizes 255/30 ZR20 and 305/25 ZR20 are supplied by Brabus technology partners Pirelli and Yokohama. This low-profile tire/wheel combination is custom-tailored for the SLR coupe and roadster and benefits not only the car’s appearance but also its handling.

Thus equipped the topless SLR is ready for some additional power provided by Brabus engine tuning. The power tuning for the supercharged 5.5-liter (335.5 cu. in.) engine consists of special camshafts, a fuel cooling system and a high-performance exhaust. With Brabus tuning, power output of the V8 compressor engine increases by 23 bhp to 640 bhp at 6,500 rpm.

Brabus also offers a special clutch-type limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent. It further optimizes traction and improves acceleration performance of the super sports car. The tuned roadster sprints to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 209 mph.

Precision handwork down to the last detail characterizes the exclusive Brabus interior design for the two-seater. The company-own upholstery shop specializes in fulfilling just about any request from discriminating SLR owners when it comes to customizing the interior. That includes a multitude of leather types and colors as well as custom upholstery designs.

An unusual Brabus specialty is the waffle-patterned leather carpeting in the SLR’s footwells. Some 7,800 meters (25,600 feet) of the finest thread are sewn with utmost precision for it alone.

A sporty and functional Brabus option is the ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel that is flattened on the bottom for markedly easier entering and exiting of the vehicle. The steering wheel features integrated buttons for manual shifting of the SLR’s automatic transmission.

Sporty Brabus carbon-fiber applications for dashboard, center console and door trim transfer the racing look of the Brabus body components into the interior. The exposed carbon-fiber trim can be color-coordinated with the leather color of the interior.

Toyota, a ship so buttoned down it makes the recently departed William F. Buckley Jr. look like Huey Newton, has no plans for radical upheaval. The current Prius is a sellout in all its five-door jelly-bean frumpiness, so the car scheduled to be revealed at the 2009 Detroit auto show will be tweaked mainly to answer minor customer beefs with the current jelly bean. It will be slightly larger, a bit more spacious inside, and trimmed with more luxury options. The engine will grow and become a tad snappier in its sprint while returning even better fuel economy. A plug-in model should arrive in 2010.

New Toyota Harier


To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Toyota's Toyopet dealerships, the automaker has worked with the legendary design studio to produce the Harrier Zagato for the Japanese market. It was unveiled today at the 2006 Tokyo Auto Gallery, a tuner/specialty car show now in its 6th year. Only 250 examples will be built.

A pure appearance package, the Zagato modifications take the sleek and sedate Harrier and give it the look of a rally car. The front fascia is overhauled with an open-look grille, new bumper, and a lip spoiler that houses round foglights. The changes continue as you walk around the car. Bulging, ventilated fender flares and lower body cladding carry the aggressive new profile to the rear, where you find revised bumper and a deeper roof spoiler. Gold five-spoke Zagato Design wheels complete the package.
